The Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament is demanding swift and decisive action from President John Dramani Mahama against the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi.
This follows the emergence of a video showing Gyamfi handing out several dollar notes to popular self-styled evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, widely known as Nana Agradaa.
The footage, which has gone viral on social media, has sparked public outrage and raised questions about the conduct of government officials in the management of public resources.
Sammy Gyamfi has since issued an apology for his actions, but critics say the gesture is not enough.
Addressing journalists in Parliament, Dr Kabiru Tia Mahama, a member of the Finance Committee, described the GoldBod CEO’s conduct as financially reckless and reflective of what he called ‘shameful arrogance.’
According to a myjoyonline.com report, he said the incident underscores broader issues of irresponsibility and lack of accountability within the current administration.
“This display of financial recklessness is not only a betrayal of public trust but also a slap in the face of the millions of Ghanaians currently grappling with the devastating effects of cedi inflation and the unbearable cost of living,” Dr Mahama said.
He emphasised that citizens are suffering economically and such acts are a direct affront to their plight.
Dr Tia Mahama further accused the government of fostering a culture of hypocrisy, noting that individuals who once championed economic discipline and anti-corruption are now engaging in the very practices they once condemned.
He added that the incident reflects a troubling trend of double standards in public office.
“It is even more shameful that this act was committed by someone who has, in the past, championed populist rhetoric about economic discipline, cedi loyalty, and anti-corruption,” he noted.
He called on the president to demonstrate leadership by holding the GoldBod CEO accountable to restore public confidence.
