Sabrina Carpenter Releases New Music Including 'Manchild'

The first week of June 2025 has ushered in a wave of significant music releases, with several prominent artists unveiling fresh tracks and albums for their fans. Hitmakers like Sabrina Carpenter, Mariah Carey, and Ed Sheeran are among those contributing to this exciting period in music.
A highlight among these new offerings is Sabrina Carpenter's latest single, "Manchild," which debuted on June 5th. This track marks her first piece of new music since the deluxe edition of her album Short n’ Sweet was released in February and stands as her first single of 2025.
Produced by frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff and co-written with Amy Allen, "Manchild" sees Carpenter delving further into the country-pop sensibilities showcased in Short n’ Sweet. The song's lyrics find Carpenter lamenting her attraction to men she perceives as incapable or "maybe useless." She candidly sings, "I like my men all incompetent," and questions their intelligence with lines like, "Why so sexy if so dumb?/And how survive the Earth so long?" The chorus includes the plea, "Man-child/Why you always come a-running to me?/F*** my life/Won’t you let an innocent woman be?"
Addressing speculation about the song's subject matter, particularly given its release timing nearly a year after "Please Please Please" (which featured her ex-boyfriend Barry Keoghan), Carpenter clarified its origins. She explained via Instagram that "Manchild" was written "on a random tuesday with amy and jack not too long after finishing short n’ sweet." She described the song as an "embodiment of a loving eye roll" and something that "will score the mental montage to the very confusing and fun young adult years of life," rather than being about any specific individual. Carpenter also emphasized its summer anthem potential, hoping fans "can stick your head out the car window and scream it all summer long!" and humorously thanked "men for testing me!!"
Carpenter teased "Manchild" four days prior to its release with a grainy Instagram clip featuring her in a "blond bombshell" persona, complete with big hair and Daisy Dukes, attempting to hitchhike on a dirt road. Fan reactions to the track have been varied. Many "Carpenters" (her fanbase name) praised the song, with one X user noting, "i like how manchild isn’t even a mean song fr, it’s really just questioning how men have lived this long being so damn dumb." Others expressed that the song needed to grow on them or felt it was too similar to artist Chappell Roan, wishing for "more meaningful lyrics." Nevertheless, strong support also emerged, with one fan on X declaring, "manchild slander is propaganda i will not be falling for."
Beyond Carpenter's release, Mariah Carey also dropped her first proper single in years, "Type Dangerous." In this new track, the iconic Songbird Supreme declares she’s "looking for the dangerous type," presenting a different take on partner attraction compared to Carpenter's "Manchild."
Ed Sheeran contributed to the week's new music with his sparkling single "Sapphire." This song sees the British pop star blending dance-pop with distinct Indian influences, even incorporating a few lyrics sung in Punjabi, showcasing his versatile musical explorations.
Adding to the list of new singles is a remix of KATSEYE’s hit "Gnarly," now featuring rapper Ice Spice. The girl group members recently told Billboard that following 2024’s "Brat Summer" and the prior "Hot Girl Summer," they are aiming for a "Gnarly" summer in 2025, with this collaboration marking a step in that direction.
The music landscape was further enriched by several album releases. Punk band Turnstile unveiled their new album, Never Enough, which arrived on Friday, June 6th.
Social media personality and singer Addison Rae also dropped her long-awaited debut solo LP, simply titled Addison. This release follows a period of steady growth with popular singles such as "Diet Pepsi," "Aquamarine," and "Headphones On."
Hip-hop legend Lil Wayne finally released Tha Carter VI. This sprawling LP includes collaborations with artists like Jelly Roll and BigXThaPlug, serving as a testament to Weezy’s enduring skill as a hip-hop craftsman, more than two decades after he initiated his acclaimed Carter album series.
With such a diverse array of new music, Billboard is keen to know which release has resonated most with fans, inviting them to vote in their weekly poll.
