The metrics based upon which most MLB clubs calculate the value of an athlete have changed over the years. Today, clubs use WAR i.e. Wins Above Replacement, as one of the factors in determining which player is worth the money. According to Kansas City Royals first baseman

Vinnie Pasquantino

, a low WAR rating is one reason why

Pete Alonso

has struggled to find his place in the

New York Mets

. Besides this, Pasquantino feels that the Mets have "undervalued" Alonso.

Pete

Alonso

has been struggling with finding his place in the New York Mets, or any other club for that say, as his free agency extends more than usual. However, one reason why Alonso might be struggling with getting signed by a club is based on the Wins Above Replacement rate.
The Kansas City Royals’ star Vinnie Pasquantino made an appearance on "The Chris Rose Rotation" podcast on Monday. During his appearance, Pasquantino shared his take on Pete Alonso's signing struggles and elaborated on the WAR rate as a factor involved. Talking about the same, the Royal's first baseman said:
"If you play first base, you essentially have to put up an .850 OPS to get paid nowadays. [That’s] fine, you need to perform. But teams use WAR. If you play first, it is very difficult to get that WAR number up because it gets so trudged down, simply, by the position … What these [front office] guys have determined is that players who handle the ball — almost, more than anybody, in terms of catching the baseball — are the least valuable people out there."

Following his take on the Wins Above Replacement rate, Vinnie Pasquantino talked about Pete Alonso's struggles with signing, as the offseason comes to an end soon. Pasquantino claimed how Alonso has been undervalued by the Mets, and talking about the same, the Royals’ star said:
“It’s just tough, Pete has been the face of the Mets for the past six years and that should mean something, in my opinion. I’m not in the room, but it does not seem that [the Mets’ front office] values things that he brings to the table, other than the numbers."

“I get that the Dodgers have the most money of any team, but they are investing in players that mean something off the field, and they are winning," Pasquantino further added.
Not just Vinnie Pasquantino, but former MLB star

Brian O'Grady

also feels that Pete Alonso is worth "more money" than how much the Mets' have offered him. However, despite his rejection of the offer, the Mets haven't given up on Alonso completely.
