Ross declared Suffolk tennis champion after protest overruled - Newsday

The Ross School was declared the Suffolk Small Schools boys tennis team champion after a protest over the alleged use of an ineligible player was overruled Wednesday by the Section XI protest committee.

The Ross School beat Bayport-Blue Point, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon, and a protest was filed on Bayport’s behalf, stating that one Ross player had not met the requirements of the “representation rule.”

The Bayport protest alleged that Ross used an ineligible player in third doubles who failed to have played in or dressed for and attended six matches during the regular season.

“The committee found that the player in question had met the state requirement to be eligible for the postseason,” said Tom Combs, the executive director of Section XI, which oversees Suffolk’s interscholastic sports. “The investigation included the review of the Ross scorebook. And we looked to see if the individual in question had the appropriate number of matches to comply with the representation rule. We found that he did meet the requirements, which deems him eligible for postseason play.”

The Ross School won all three singles matches and clinched the title with a win by seniors Alex Frohlich and Rowan O’Brien over the Phantoms team of Declan Schug and Eric Swinkin, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, at fourth doubles. It was the third straight county championship for the Ravens.

Bayport finished its season at 14-3.

Ross (17-1) will advance to Saturday’s 11 a.m. Long Island championship match at Smithtown East in search of its first Long Island championship and will face Nassau champion Friends Academy (8-7) for a spot in the state semifinals at the USTA National Tennis Center in Queens.

Ross and Friends have met in each of the last two Long Island title matches with the Quakers prevailing each time.

“Friends is great, but we think we can match them with our talent,” O’Brien said. “This is going to be about who wants it more and last year they did.”

The Nassau Large Schools boys team tennis championship between Roslyn and Syosset was postponed on Wednesday due to inclement weather. The teams are now scheduled to play at Wheatley High School on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
