'Rogue One' Tops Disney+ Streaming Chart After 'Andor' Season 2 Finale

Published 3 days ago3 minute read

Cassian Andor has finally wrapped up his story, and headed into the events of Rogue One in the finale of Andor Season 2. Which naturally means that a lot of people want to see his story come to its true conclusion in the 2016 movie that began his on-screen saga. It is therefore not surprising that one of the best Star Wars series ever has sent one of the best Star Wars ever zooming to the top of the Disney+ chart almost a decade after its release.

Andor has been an incredible journey, and Season 2 has been sitting atop the Disney+ TV chart for the last several weeks. Of course, depending on how you view it, the series’ ending leaves the story incomplete, and there are a lot of fans who have just been unable to resist returning to Rogue One, whether for the first time or the seventh viewing.

Andor positioned its final episodes mere days before the events of Rogue One. Viewers left Cassian on Yavin 4, determined to fight alongside the nascent Rebel Alliance, and with Disney+ helpfully asking whether you would like to “continue watching” and making Rogue One just a quick click away, it is not surprising that so many people are choosing to do just that and complete the arc.

Critics once called Rogue One a tonal outlier as something completely outside the usual remit of a Star Wars movie. In Andor, Tony Gilroy continued to hang onto everything that made the 2016 movie such a breath of fresh air for the franchise. Focusing more on behind-the-scenes espionage and bureaucracy over lightsaber battles, the story of Cassian Andor became a mature story that stood out and earned its place in the franchise.

Now, the future of Star Wars is all about getting back into theaters, and some of the projects coming down the line could certainly benefit from looking at why Rogue One and Andor are such beacons in the franchise. The Mandalorian & Grogu will hit cinemas next summer, bringing the story of Pedro Pascal’s character to cinemas, and paving the way for the culmination of The Mandalorian era with a movie from Dave Filoni sometime in the next few years.

This will be followed by Starfighter, a brand-new Star Wars story from Shawn Levy, which will star Ryan Gosling, and movies by James Mangold (Dawn of the Jedi), Taika Waititi, and Daisy Ridley’s return to the franchise under the direction of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which is believed to be coming in 2027. These movies will be served up alongside several others, and a handful of TV shows, but, like every major franchise, the slate of projects seems to be constantly in flux.

For now, though, Rogue One is once again getting its dues as the most watched movie on Disney+ around the world. With the rest of the Disney+ chart being dominated by Star Wars content, it looks like several missteps of the last couple of years have already been swept away on the back of Andor’s success.
