A rockslide blocked several lanes of U.S. Highway 101 just north of the Golden Gate Bridge beginning Thursday evening and well into Friday.

The California Highway Patrol said the slide just south of Rodeo Avenue in Sausalito began Thursday at around 8 p.m. and blocked the No. 4 lane.

Just before 11 p.m., the CHP said the rockslide had blocked an additional two lanes. Caltrans crews worked overnight and throughout the day Friday to clear the lanes.

As of 6:45 a.m., the No. 3 and 4 lanes were still blocked during the morning into San Francisco and the CHP estimated the cleanup would be completed by 8 a.m.

However, Caltrans later said crews were still working to clear the slide and the lanes would remain closed until sometime later on Friday. A spokesperson said the lanes were expected to remain closed through the evening commute and there was no exact estimate when the lanes would reopen.

"We've had dump trucks running sort of around the clock since last night" to clear the roadway, said spokesperson Bart Ney.

The two closed lanes were almost cleared of debris as of Friday afternoon but crews will need to keep them shut down to install new barriers known as K-rails "so if anything else does come down, it'll stay behind the barrier," Ney said.

Motorists going through the area should expect delays until the roadway is fully reopened.

There were no injuries reported.
