RJ Luis Jr. and Flory Bidunga among Saturday's top men's basketball transfer entrants
The first Saturday of the Transfer portal is here, coinciding with the first day of the Elite Eight. Initially, it appeared that the resumption of the NCAA Tournament would stop players from entering the transfer portal, at least until the games were over. I must have missed the memo because it appears the portal never sleeps.
Saturday, some fantastic players entered the portal, but for the first time, there were not many of them. In that regard, the portal was quiet for the first time. Even though very few players entered the portal, today was the best day of the portal so far based on talent.
As always, some players stood out more than the others in the portal. Today's players entering the portal were all-stars, and the current best player in the 2025 portal entered this morning. Here are the 10 best players to join on day 6 of the transfer portal.
3.1 points, 1.2 rebounds, .4 assists
It is no surprise that the sophomore guard is transferring. He could not get in the good graces of the current USC coaching staff and rarely played. Patton Jr. played a lot during his first year and was one of the best freshmen in the Pac-12. It was a win for coach Musselman to get the guard back this season.
Ignore the massive regression because the minutes got cut by 20 a night. Patton is a gifted athletic guard who can run the floor and shoot the ball well from deep. He isn't a great defender, which ultimately cost him playing time this season, but because of his athleticism, he is worth an offer.
8.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.0 assists
The forward from Houston came on strong over the last five games of the season and gave all of the coaches in the country a look at his potential. He scored 18 points against Arizona and ended the year with a season-high 21-point performance against UCF in the conference tournament. That's not bad, considering his coach was fired mid-way through the season.
Dawes is an interesting player because he put up great numbers for a guy who played less than 20 minutes a night. He is another freaky athlete who can jump out of a gym whenever possible. The forward also shoots threes well enough to keep defenses honest. Dawes will start for a lower-level power conference school but will dominate in the mid-major ranks.
7.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, .7 assists
As the year went on, it became clear that Catchings didn't fit into the plans at BYU, and head coach Kevin Young recruited other players over him. The freshman guard only played 23 minutes over the last four games and scored two points with three rebounds. His transfer became evident when he couldn't even get in the game in the blowout loss to Alabama in the tournament.
The guard was a highly ranked recruit who dominated the high school ranks. He can shoot, put the ball on the floor, and get to the rim, and he will be a good rebounder. He is at his best when he can get out in transition and make things happen. He entered the portal with a no-contact tag. He will likely commit quickly.
10.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists
There is a lot to like about Lewis, mainly that his coach was Tommy Lloyd in Arizona, who runs one of the best offensive schemes in the country. Lewis is also one of the rare transfer portal entrants who has started for two straight NCAA Tournament teams and was a key role player. He isn't flashy but works hard and contributes to winning games.
Lewis will not wow you with his ability, especially on the offense. No one will question his want to, attitude, or toughness. There is something to players who can throw their weight around. Lewis is a terrible shooter and gets most of his points by letting his fantastic defensive ability dictate his offense. He is one of those guys who doesn't need to score to be effective. There is always room for those guys.
5.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, .2 assists
There are different types of big men in basketball: those who score a lot and can stretch the floor and those like Bodo Bodo. Bodo Bodo is one of the game's best old-school big men. You will never see him shoot threes, and he rarely leaves the post during a game.
Defense is the name of the game for the sophomore big man. He is the 2 time Defensive Player of the Year in the Big South. He is only a sophomore and won it in his first year. Bodo Bodo has all the makings of an elite shot blocker and rebounder in the right system. No one will have to worry about his offensive efficiency since most of his shots are dunks and ally-oops at the rim.
10.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists
Colorado State was one of the best teams that no one talked about this year because they didn't have many great wins but had fantastic players who took a little bit to gel. Evans was one of those great players. The point guard showed the world who he was with two fantastic NCAA Tournament games.
If you want to know how to describe Evans, there are two things you can look at. The first is that he is one of the best three-point shooters in the country, at well over 44%. He shoots almost 90% from the line, and he in no way has come anywhere close to his offensive ceiling. The second is his ability to pass. Every good point guard needs to keep the ball moving, and there were times this season when Evans was the leader of some elite ball movement. It will be interesting to see if the point guard follows his old coach, Niko Medved, to Minnesota.
9.6 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.7 assists
It is never easy to play for coach Mick Cronin because he expects a lot from you, and all aspects of the game must be done in Coach Cronin's way. Guys who play for him are some of the most disciplined basketball players in the country because he forces you to be. Mack's entry into the portal is likely solely related to the Bruins' recent signing of Donovan Dent.
The guard was a highly touted recruit who chose UCLA over several other Blue Blood programs. The guard was a good player for Coach Cronin and proved his effectiveness when he could get to the rim for easy baskets. Mack is one of the best defensive guards in the portal. He will lock down the opponent's best player and force them into tough shots. Something tells me the guard will stay in the Big Ten.
10.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, .8 assists
Something is going on in Illinois, and it isn't suitable for the program. In the last 48 hours, they have lost three players to the transfer portal. Two of those players were major contributors to the highest-scoring and best-rebounding team in the Big Ten. As a result of the "mass exodus," as it were, the rumors about head coach Brad Underwood are starting to fly.
Illinois was the worst shooting team in the Big Ten, and none of its players were great shooters. However, all the Illinois players were adept at taking the ball to the rim and rebounding, White included. The junior was adept at getting to the rim and finishing tough baskets.
His offensive game is limited due to his lack of shooting, but he was a two-year starter for one of the premier teams in the Big Ten. He will find a destination and thrive there.
5.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, .3 assists
It's hard to understand why Bidunga put his name in the transfer portal. He started his career playing for the legendary Bill Self. With Hunter Dickinson gone, he would have a chance to make a National Title game every season and get starters' minutes next year. See, this one doesn't make sense.
It does make sense if you step back and look at it. Coach Self said the team had no chemistry and didn't like each other. Bidunga may have had enough and wanted out. The team that gets the big man will get a raw athlete who is a pile of muscle and patrols the paint with the best of them. Bidunga shot almost 70% from the floor this year, but that is expected, considering most of his shots were dunks.
18.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists
Luis instantly becomes the best player in the transfer portal. The Big East Player of the Year had a great season and led St. John's resurgence to the top of the Big East. If Luis had not been benched for the last five minutes of the game against Arkansas in the NCAA Tournament, who knows if he would be in the portal right now? Coach Pitino claimed it was a mutual decision.
Luis had a great year because he was in a perfect situation. He doesn't shoot the ball well from deep, but he is excellent at getting to the rim and getting fouled. The guard will need to choose a team, amongst his many suitors, who will put him in a position to succeed by not having to shoot threes. He is a good player, but he will be able to maximize his ability, like this season, in only a few places. He is originally from Miami, FL, and that program would love to have him as the centerpiece of the rebuild and jumpstart the rebuild next year.
