Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), the Chief Electoral Commissioner of RSIEC, announced the new election date at a stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has scheduled a fresh local government election for August 9, 2025, following the Supreme Court’s ruling that nullified the previous polls conducted on October 5, 2024.
Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), the Chief Electoral Commissioner of RSIEC, announced the new election date at a stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.
The Supreme Court’s judgment on Friday declared the 2024 local government elections invalid, prompting Governor Siminalayi Fubara to assure residents that his administration will fully comply with the verdict.
In a state broadcast on Sunday, Fubara stated that he has met with his legal team, which expects to obtain the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgment by Friday, March 7, 2025.
“As a responsible government, we are committed to upholding constitutional principles and will act strictly in line with the law,” Fubara said.
In the interim, the governor directed the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to assume control of the 23 local government councils, ensuring governance continuity until fresh elections are conducted.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court, in a separate judgment, barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other agencies from releasing funds to the Rivers State government.
The court ruled that the state must first comply with previous court orders before accessing federal allocations.
