Retrospective on Aamir Khan's Creative Clashes, Citing 'Taare Zameen Par' Director Change

Aamir Khan, a prominent figure in Bollywood, has long been associated with the label of 'perfectionist'. While this reputation often underscores his dedication and meticulous approach to filmmaking, it has also become a focal point for controversy, with several critics and industry insiders alleging that he frequently oversteps his role, overshadowing directors and covertly taking control of film production.

The debate surrounding Aamir Khan's directorial influence has been recently rekindled by revelations from Darsheel Safary, the child star of the acclaimed film 'Taare Zameen Par'. Safary recounted how Aamir Khan, who was not initially slated as the director, unexpectedly assumed directorial responsibilities from the film's writer and creative director, Amole Gupte.

According to Darsheel Safary, the shift in direction occurred after Aamir Khan made the decision to re-film a significant scene, instructing everyone to disregard the previously shot footage. Although Amole Gupte remained on set in a creative capacity, the directorial reins were effectively passed to Aamir, who gradually took full control over the film's direction. Safary also shared his personal experience, noting he felt intimidated by Aamir initially, contrasting with his more relaxed and friendly rapport with Gupte, who had discovered him. He mentioned that Aamir and Amole often discussed creative aspects, with Aamir frequently offering his suggestions.

In response to these persistent allegations of 'hijacking' films, Aamir Khan has expressed his frustration. He has stated in media interactions that such rumors often surface when a film he was previously associated with doesn't perform well after his departure, creating a narrative that is hard to dispel. Khan maintains that the final creative decisions rest with the officially credited directors and that his involvement is often misrepresented.

Aamir Khan is set to return to the silver screen with 'Sitaare Zameen Par', a thematic successor to 'Taare Zameen Par', scheduled for release on June 20. In this upcoming film, he transitions from his previous role as a compassionate teacher to portray a basketball coach.

The 'Taare Zameen Par' incident is not an isolated case in Aamir Khan's career. He also had a notable fallout with acclaimed '90s filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, the director of 'Rangeela'. During a fan interaction on Rediff, Aamir addressed this strained relationship, explaining that it originated from a comment Varma made suggesting a minor actor had outshone Aamir in a particular scene. This remark, reportedly misunderstood and amplified by the media, led to unresolved tensions, prompting Aamir to distance himself from Varma.

These instances highlight the complexities of Aamir Khan's 'perfectionist' persona. While it drives his pursuit of quality, it has also led to significant creative clashes and continues to fuel debate about his methods and influence within the highly collaborative environment of filmmaking.
