Retaining wall of a well collapses in Kolhapur's Ingali village, surrounding houses & mosque at risk
Kolhapur: In Ingali village of Kolhapur's Hatkanangale tehsil, the protective wall of a well, known as ‘sahamot', in front of a mosque collapsed early on Wednesday morning. The adjacent road also caved in, endangering nearby houses and the mosque.
A similar collapse had occurred at the same well on March 25 this year. The historic sahamot well, owned by Bhatmare-Khot, is located along the Ingali-Hupari road. Approximately 42 years ago, a section of the well collapsed inward. During subsequent road expansion works, construction was carried out over the collapsed area with additional fill material. On March 25 this year, well erosion caused another collapse, damaging both the adjacent road and the gram panchayat's water tank.Sarpanch Dadasaheb More said, "We approached the district collector's office on May 20, demanding that the construction of this well should start as soon as possible and this road should be reopened for traffic. However, the well and a major portion of the road have collapsed again, posing a threat to the entire area. As this road is the only road between Ingali and Hupari, traffic movement has also been disrupted."The site was inspected by provincial officer Mousami Chougule, upper tehsildar Sunil Sherkhane, and a senior engineer from the public works and construction department of the zilla parishad.
Meanwhile, the rainfall intensity in the region decreased on Wednesday morning, with intermittent showers throughout the day. The district recorded 20mm of rainfall on Wednesday. At Rajaram barrage in Kasba Bawda area of Kolhapur city, the Panchaganga river measured 19.6ft by evening, against a warning level of 39ft and danger mark of 43 feet. Eleven barrages remain submerged due to swollen waters.
