CNA week

National Nursing Assistants Week is a time to honor the dedication, compassion, and essential role CNAs play in patient care.

This year’s theme, recognizes the tireless efforts of nurse assistants like Frensha Sims, who go above and beyond to ensure Veterans receive quality, personalized care every day.

In the Community Living Center, Frensha Sims brings dedication, heart, and unmatched energy to her restorative care role. For the past seven years, Frensha has worked closely with Veterans to support their mobility and overall wellness through daily exercises and physical activity—helping them stay strong, flexible, and independent.

Frensha’s journey into healthcare began from a deeply personal place. “After losing elderly family members to illness, I felt like I could have done more,” she shared. “Now, every day I make it my mission to assist others and be fully dedicated to their needs.”

One moment that stands out for Frensha involved a Veteran who was withdrawn and unwilling to take steps toward recovery. “He didn’t want to exercise, and every time I tried to motivate him, he would tell me to leave. But I didn’t give up,” she said. That persistence paid off when the Veteran eventually walked to the restorative room and said, “Oh, on the day I was ready, you didn’t come.” The two began working together, and to this day, the Veteran continues to prioritize daily movement—returning now and then just to thank her.

To Frensha, Certified Nursing Assistants are the backbone of care. “We’re the first line of defense. We spend the most time with our residents and know when something isn’t right,” she said. “We make the CLC feel like home.”

Reflecting on this year’s CNA Week theme, she added:

“‘We Are the Champions’ is the best theme I’ve seen so far—and it’s true. We’re number one when it comes to patient care, exceptional service, and creating a positive, fun environment. That’s why the Veterans love us.”
