The House of Representatives Committee on Customs and Excise has picked holes in the slow pace of work and use of substandard materials at the ongoing Customs Training School Complex project in Ogun State.
The committee visited the complex as part of an oversight visit to Ogun 2 Command Abeokuta on Tuesday.
The project located at Ilishan Remo near the Cargo Airport was designed to have a command office building, a church, a mosque, a school, official quarters for the rank and file, a library and other structures.
Chairman of the committee, Rep. Leke Abejide, who led members round the project site discovered that the blocks being used were substandard as they broke after being hit by some of the members including the deputy chairman of the committee, Rep. Hassan Hussein.
This infuriated the chairman and members of the committee who berated the project managers and the lead consultant and resident architect, Andy Ondo, who were at the site.
Speaking, chairman of the committee, Rep. Abejide, said they were disappointed with the Ogun 2 Area Command comptroller, Comptroller Alade Olusola Bisi, over his handling of the command’s affairs.
He said the project was vital to the customs and as such, they decided to visit during the oversight to see the level of work done.
Rep. Abejide said, “This is one of the projects the CGC insisted that we should visit during this oversight. As you can see, the area comptroller is not even aware that a project of this nature is located in his command.
“The contractor has told us that the period for this contract is 36 weeks and they have also said that they will complete the work by October 2026. We will come to see the progress of work done.
“However, we are not happy with the quality of blocks being used for this construction. You can see that the blocks are not strong.”
