The late Alhaji Ahmadu Haruna Zago, the Managing Director of the Kano Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB), has been buried at the Abbatoir graveyard in Kofar Mazugal, after his funeral prayer at the Emir’s Palace on Thursday.
Zago, a prominent Kano politician, died in the early hours of Thursday at his residence in Bachirwa, Fagge Local Government Area of Kano.
Sheikh Aminu Daurawa led the funeral prayer, with several dignitaries in attendance, including Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, and other notable personalities, along with hundreds of mourners.
Governor Yusuf, in a statement by his spokesman, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, described Zago as a master political strategist who significantly shaped Kano’s political landscape.
Zago, who served as the Kano State ANPP chairman and political advisor to Governor Ibrahim Shekarau between 2003 and 2007, was also an ally of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
He was appointed interim chairman of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the state before serving as Special Adviser on Agriculture to Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje from 2015 to 2021.
Later, Zago parted ways with Buhari and aligned himself with Shekarau to form an APC faction in Kano, aiming to unseat the state party chairman, Abdullahi Abbas.
He was instrumental in attempting to reconcile Kwankwaso and Ganduje, though their political rivalry persists.
In 2023, Zago was appointed Managing Director of REMASAB by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
