Lars Klingbeil Expected to Be Germany's Next Finance Minister

Lars Klingbeil, Germany's incoming finance minister and co-chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), is characterized as a political "bridge-builder" known for his calm demeanor and sharp political instincts. Despite the SPD's election loss, Klingbeil is set to control Germany's finances under Friedrich Merz. He will also serve as vice chancellor.
Klingbeil, who studied political science, sociology, and history, will manage significant spending to rebuild Germany's military and infrastructure. His ability to establish a friendly rapport with Merz during coalition talks positions him for a potential future run at the top job. Political scientist Wolfgang Schroeder notes Klingbeil's readiness to compromise, contrasting him with authoritarian leaders. Der Spiegel describes him as "unflappable, unpretentious, unthreatening... almost boring," highlighting his thoughtful and deliberate approach to decision-making.
Standing at 1.96 meters tall, Klingbeil engages in CrossFit and kickboxing. He emphasizes the value of political compromises, stating that "building bridges is something I've always found enriching." When criticized by the SPD's youth wing leader over migration plans, Klingbeil defended the right to express differing opinions.
Born in Soltau, Klingbeil still resides in the same region with his wife, Lena-Sophie Mueller, and their child. In his youth, he was a member of a punk band and continues to play the guitar. He worked in the office of former SPD chancellor Gerhard Schroeder but has since distanced himself due to Schroeder's relationship with Vladimir Putin. Klingbeil entered the Bundestag in 2005 and has been the SPD's co-chair since 2021.
After the SPD's historic defeat in February's election, Klingbeil played a key role in coalition negotiations, developing a congenial relationship with Merz. A Bayern Munich fan and former advisory board member, Klingbeil has recently spoken about his diagnosis with oral cancer in 2014, which taught him to approach life more calmly.
