Renewed Land Dispute in Ebonyi Claims Lives and Destroys Property
Tensions have once again erupted between the Ndukwe Community in Amasiri, Afikpo Local Government Area, and Okporojo in Osso Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, resulting in a tragic loss of life and widespread destruction. At least four people have been confirmed dead in the renewed outbreak of violence stemming from a protracted land dispute that has plagued the region for decades.
The recent hostilities have not only claimed lives but have also led to the destruction of houses and properties, inflicting millions of naira in damages. According to a source from Okporojo, the victims were residents of their community, and the attacks were allegedly carried out by individuals from neighboring Amasiri. However, independent confirmation of the assailants' identities remains pending.
The escalating security situation has instilled fear among residents of Edda LGA, prompting many to avoid the Amasiri road altogether. Instead, they are opting for longer routes through Afikpo town to circumvent potential attacks. Despite previous attempts to mediate and resolve the longstanding conflict, including a white paper issued by a past administration based on recommendations from a government committee, the implementation of these resolutions has reportedly stalled, contributing to the recurring violence.
Chima Ekumankama, Chairman of Edda Local Government Area, confirmed the fatalities, stating that four people were killed during the recent attack on Okporojo Idima in Osso Edda. He assured the public that security operatives have been deployed to the area to restore order and stability. Ekumankama also mentioned his visit to the affected area to reassure residents of the government's commitment to resolving the lingering dispute.
Ekumankama commended the state governor, Francis Nwifuru, for his swift action in deploying security agents to the area. "I can assure you that normalcy and peace have returned to the area. I personally visited the area and witnessed the level of destruction done, and as we speak, there are enough security personnel in the area to forestall a reoccurrence," he stated.
Similarly, Timothy Nwachi, Chairman of Afikpo LGA, acknowledged the deployment of security operatives to the buffer zone between the communities to de-escalate tensions and restore normalcy. He expressed his regret over the renewed hostility and appealed to the people of Amasiri to remain calm while awaiting the government's decision on the matter.
Meanwhile, police spokesperson in the State, Joshua Ukandu, stated that he had not yet received official notification regarding the recent attack in the area.
