Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has proposed that funds allocated for the construction of the controversial National Cathedral should be redirected to the Mahama Cares Initiative, a medical trust fund aimed at supporting individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as cancer, kidney failure, and heart conditions.

According to him, if such a proposal is agreed upon, the money could provide financial assistance for critical healthcare needs in the country.

In a post on May 17, 2025, Dr Amoakohene took to his social media page to solicit public support for the initiative, presenting the idea in a suggestive manner.

"I move that all donations to the National Cathedral be redirected to the Mahama Cares initiative to support critical needs. Against or for the motion?" his post read.

The Mahama Cares Initiative, introduced by President John Dramani Mahama, is designed to ease the financial burden of medical treatment and improve access to healthcare for affected individuals.

The National Cathedral project, championed by the former Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, was intended to serve as a national symbol of faith and unity.

However, it has faced intense scrutiny over funding transparency, procurement abuses, public deception, stalled construction, and concerns about long-term sustainability

Reports indicate that over $58 million has already been paid to architects and contractors, yet there is little visible progress on the project. Additionally, debts remain unpaid to contractors and individuals whose properties were demolished to make way for the project.
