Red Sox Call Up Top Baseball Prospect Roman Anthony

The Boston Red Sox have made a significant roster move, calling up Roman Anthony, widely regarded as the top prospect in all of baseball, to the Major Leagues. Anthony was promoted from Triple-A Worcester on Monday, June 9, 2025, and is set to join the Red Sox as they commence a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park. In his much-anticipated debut, Anthony is slated to bat fifth and play right field for Boston.
Upon receiving the news of his promotion from WooSox manager Chad Tracy, Anthony described the day as "a blur." The call-up came late in the afternoon on Monday, necessitating a commute from Worcester to Boston. Fortunately, he made it to Fenway Park in time for his debut without incident. "It was great, there wasn't too much traffic," Anthony shared with reporters. "Obviously, a little bit of a short notice. But better than being on the bus to Lehigh Valley right now." Anthony's call-up fills the roster spot vacated by outfielder Wilyer Abreu, who was placed on the Injured List with a left oblique strain. The 21-year-old Anthony now joins fellow top prospects Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer in the big leagues.
Anthony's promotion is well-earned, following a scorching start to the season for Triple-A Worcester. He was slashing .288/.423/.491 with an impressive 10 home runs, nine doubles, and 29 RBI over 212 at-bats. Perhaps most notably, Anthony demonstrated excellent plate discipline, drawing 51 walks while striking out only 56 times in 265 plate appearances. His power was on full display Saturday night when he launched a colossal 497-foot grand slam for Worcester, the longest home run measured by Statcast this season.
The Red Sox organization had been carefully considering the timing of Anthony's promotion. Despite his readiness, the team was cautious about rushing him, especially after an injury kept him out of the outfield at the beginning of the 2025 season. Additionally, they wanted to ensure he would receive consistent playing time, which wasn't guaranteed with a crowded Boston outfield. Boston manager Alex Cora commented on Anthony's progress to WEEI last week, stating, "The timing is something, as an organization, we're going to decide when. Obviously, he's doing an outstanding job. He's getting better. He's not knocking at the door, he's knocking it down, let's be honest." That door has now definitively been knocked down by Anthony.
Roman Anthony was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the second round (79th overall) of the 2022 MLB Draft out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. During his high school career, he was recognized as Florida's Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior, a season in which he led the Eagles to their second consecutive state and national titles.
Anthony's ascent through Boston's minor league system was notably swift. He earned a promotion to Double-A Portland by the end of 2023 and began the 2024 season there. By the conclusion of the 2024 season, he had already advanced to Triple-A Worcester. His debut with the WooSox was historic, as he became the youngest Red Sox prospect to play in a Triple-A game in 46 years.
The 2024 season was a breakout year for Anthony, where he showcased his all-around talent across both Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester. He posted a .291/.396/.498 slash line, complemented by 18 home runs, 32 doubles, four triples, 65 RBI, 93 runs scored, and 21 stolen bases over 119 total games. This stellar performance garnered him numerous accolades, including being named a Minor League All-Star, Portland's MVP, and an All-MiLB Prospect First Teamer. By the end of the 2024 season, he was ranked as the top prospect in baseball, a distinction he carried into the 2025 season.
Now, Roman Anthony will look to translate his minor league success and immense potential into a successful career at the Major League level, aiming to add to his growing list of achievements with the Boston Red Sox.
