Recover and re-focus: Alisson Becker on UCL exit and Carabao Cup final

Published 3 days ago2 minute read

The Reds were knocked out of Europe at the last-16 stage on Tuesday night as Paris Saint-Germain edged a high-class tie via a penalty shootout.

Ousmane Dembele’s early goal saw PSG win 1-0 at Anfield in the second leg to cancel out the Reds’ victory by the same scoreline at Parc des Princes six days earlier.

With the tie ending 1-1 after extra-time had been played at Anfield, Luis Enrique’s team progressed with a 4-1 success in the shootout.

The focus within Arne Slot’s squad will now turn to the weekend meeting with Newcastle United at Wembley and, after the defeat by PSG, Alisson told Liverpoolfc.com: “We improved a lot in respect of the first game, that’s a good thing.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t get the result, conceding the goal doesn’t help at all [and] in penalties anything can happen. But we have to recognise that the opponent did really well, they are a really good team.

“It’s tough to take it because we know we could do more but we have no time to complain too much – we have a final to play at the weekend and [need to] still keep on going in the Premier League.

“We created a lot. They created some chances as well, it was an open game. We had more chances but they defended well as well, blocking shots and [Gianluigi] Donnarumma did a great game as well.

“At this moment you just have to recognise the strength of the opponent because we gave everything, we did our best and needed a little bit more luck at the end. But it wasn’t the case tonight.

“This is football, anything can happen. This is the Champions League, the best teams in the world are playing and we just have to keep on going for the rest of the season.”

Looking ahead to the immediate challenge of a final against Newcastle, Alisson added: “We have to use the time to recover. We are glad that we have enough time to do that because we know it’s going to be a tough match as well, [against] a tough opponent.

“We are going to have to work really hard as a team to win the trophy and we are here for that: to win all the trophies that we can.”
