Rain intensifies in the Nilgiris

UDHAGAMANDALAM: Southwest monsoon intensified in the Nilgiris on Monday, bringing strong winds and continuous rain. The Avalanche area in Kundha taluk recorded the highest 681 mm of rainfall over the past three days.

The rain gauge at Avalanche noted 353 mm of rain over the 24 hours ending at 7 am on Monday while Upper Bhavani reported 298 mm in the same period.

This was followed by Glenmorgan with 105 mm, Kundah with 115 mm, Emerald with 182 mm, Gudalur with 153 mm, Upper Gudalur with 135 mm, Pandalur with 137 mm, Cherangode with 139 mm and Ooty with 71 mm. In the Nilgiris district, Kundha and Gudalur taluks received the most rain, followed by Pandalur and Ooty taluks.

On Monday, rain and heavy wind caused damage in several places in the district. At least 28 trees were uprooted, including 16 in Ooty and its surrounding areas. Fire and rescue personnel, along with the highways and forest departments, worked to clear the fallen trees. In the Kodappamund area of Ooty, a roadside revetment collapsed due to continuous rain.

A tree fell on the Ketti police station under renovation, causing damage.

The station has been under repair after a similar incident during last monsoon. Another tree was uprooted near Raj Bhavan, located within the Government Botanical Garden in Ooty.A landslide occurred on the road near Bembatti village in the Ithalar panchayat Kundha taluk, disrupting traffic temporarily. The debris was later cleared using earthmovers. A rock rolled down on the Kallatti Ghat road near the 20th hairpin bend, blocking traffic.Over the past three days, the Nilgiris district has reported partial damage to four houses and damage to 300 banana plants. Around 70 trees were uprooted. Rain claimed a human life in the last three days.The district administration said all tourist spots under the forest department, except the Kodanad viewpoint and those managed by the horticulture and tourism departments, would remain closed to visitors on Tuesday.
