Heavy rain affects normal life in Nilgiris

UDHAGAMANDALAM: The Nilgiris district experienced heavy rain and strong winds on Monday. The continuous rainfall and chilly conditions disrupted normal life in several parts of the district.In response to the persistent rain and winds, Nilgiris collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru announced a holiday for schools in Ooty, Kundha Gudalur and Pandalur taluks on Monday. The forest department temporarily closed several tourist spots -- including Doddabetta and Avalanche -- to tourists. Boating in Ooty lake was suspended for a day due to the weather conditions.Avalanche in Kundha taluk recorded 292 mm of rain in 24 hours ending at 7 am on Monday.

Ooty, Gudalur, Kundha and Pandalur taluks received heavy rainfall while Kotagiri and Coonoor taluks got moderate rain.Upperbhavani received 168 mm of rain, followed by Parsons Valley with 132 mm, Pandalur with 130 mm and Cherangode with 118 mm. Ooty recorded 16 mm of rainfall.According to revenue officials, strong winds uprooted at least four trees in and around Ooty. Manjanakoarai Road in Ooty suffered damage due to a landslip.

It was the second landslip on the road in ten days. State highway authorities started road repair work.In Gandhi Nagar, near Thalaikundha, a large eucalyptus tree fell on a parked autorickshaw. Many areas in the district experienced power outages because of heavy rain. Two tiled houses were damaged -- one in Pandalur and another in Gudalur. No one was injured. Fire and rescue personnel, along with highway workers, cleared the uprooted trees.Teams from the Tamil Nadu Disaster Response Force (TNDRF) removed several trees deemed hazardous. Three TNDRF teams were stationed in Pandalur, Gudalur and Kundha taluks. The district administration confirmed that disaster management measures were in place to handle any emergencies that may arise.
