Reports of Deepika Padukone's departure from Sandeep Reddy Vanga's film Spirit has sparked conversation in the film industry, especially after it was suggested that her removal was due to ‘unprofessional demands.’ Following Ajay Devgn's support for the actress, Radhika Apte—also a recent mother—commented that the industry does not adequately support the needs of new mothers.

Radhika Apte, known for her role in Lust Stories, revealed her pregnancy last year when she proudly displayed her baby bump on the BAFTA Awards red carpet. She attended the event in support of her British film Sister Midnight, which was nominated in the category of Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer. In December 2024, Apte and her husband, Benedict Taylor, welcomed their daughter.

In a recent interview with SCREEN, Radhika Apte was asked whether the film industry supports the needs of new mothers. She voiced her concerns, saying, “I don’t think they are. I don’t know how I’m going to navigate that going ahead.”

Radhika went on to explain her concerns, highlighting that actors often have little time to spend with their children due to long shooting hours. She said, “It’s really difficult to work in our film industry, given the number of hours and how we film generally, and the time for which we don’t get to see the child. So, I guess I’ll just have to figure it out now.”

Interestingly, this follows a recent report which alleged that Deepika Padukone was dropped from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit after her agency requested contract modifications. According to the report, she declined to work for more than six hours a day and also asked for additional payment for each day the shoot went beyond 100 days.

Meanwhile, Ajay Devgn addressed the controversy during the trailer launch of Maa, stating that most “honest filmmakers” have no issue with such demands. He also noted that the industry is gradually shifting toward 8-9 hour workdays.
