BLOOMINGTON — Purdue men’s basketball surged into halftime at IU, then collapsed with perhaps its worst 20 minutes of the season for a 73-58 loss on Sunday.

Player ratings from the Boilermakers’ fourth straight loss — one which raises serious question about this team’s trajectory as March approaches.

∎ 4/10

Could not be the calming, stabilizing presence for the offense when it needed him most. The high turnover games only work when his expanded usage also leads to a lot of points and/or turnovers.

∎ 6/10

A big defensive catalyst. Steal and score after IU opened the game with a defensive stop. Another one to lead a break out of the under-8 timeout, leading to a Fletcher Loyer 3 to spark what at the time appeared to be a game-changing run.

∎ 7/10

Kept capitalizing when IU gave him the space to shoot, hitting two crucial 3s during that 21-4 run to close the first half. They overshadowed an earlier and-one when Purdue needed positive momentum. Among many who were unable to create a defensive disruption when the game slid downhill.

∎ 5/10

Needed a bounce-back night on the boards and more or less provided one. Wasn't the biggest issue on offense, but the trade-off of someone more dynamic to get his defense and rebounding will occasionally show up.

∎ 5/10

Had the ball in his hands in the paint early and often. Yet on an afternoon where calls are harder to come by, could not capitalize enough through congestion and contact. Hoosiers did a solid job containing him, and too many second-half possessions ended in turnovers for Purdue to do anything about it. Lots of offensive fouls, including the one that ended his day.

∎ 2/10

Painter rewarded Berg’s bench work at Michigan State by subbing him in for Kaufman-Renn early. In less than a minute he committed two foul and got posterized by Oumar Ballo.

∎ 4/10

Solid minutes when Kaufman-Renn needed his second breather of the first half.

∎ 7/10*

Picked a good day for the shooting touch to show up early. Those were the big splash moments, but his athleticism as a defender and rebounder were essential to the run the Boilers made to close the first half.

∎ 5/10

Did not get much run as Purdue could never achieve the offensive stability necessary to turn to him for a defensive boost.

Zach Edey left Purdue as one kind of big man. With the Grizzlies, he's becoming another.

∎ 6/10

Some good offensive moments off the bench, at least in the first half. Had Purdue been able to run offense for the first 15 or so minutes of the second half, maybe he could have kept it going.
