Public officers must declare assets

Published 3 days ago2 minute read

It is shameful that the system designed to check corruption remains underutilised. The asset declaration law will remain ineffective unless the CCB gains full independence.

In the European Union, the declaration of assets by politicians, public officials, and politically exposed persons has been a cornerstone of anti-corruption policies.

The European Commission supervises this and makes recommendations to member states on scope, transparency, and enforcement.

Asset declaration systems in the EU vary, but generally aim to disclose personal interests, income, business interests, and other assets to prevent conflicts of interest and illicit enrichment.

Public disclosure is also practised in the United States. There, public officials, including Congress members and executive branch officials, are required to file financial disclosure reports. This is to ensure transparency and prevent conflicts of interest. These reports detail their income, assets, and liabilities, and can be accessed by the public.

Nigeria should adopt these sound principles.

The National Assembly should amend the Constitution to require public disclosure of asset declarations, overriding privacy and security concerns. The CCB must act decisively and demonstrate its commitment by prosecuting offenders and restoring public trust.

Asset declaration is a vital tool for transparency and accountability in the fight against corruption. The CCB, NASS and other political leaders must ensure the law is enforced rigorously and openly.
