WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Poker Face season 2, episode 5.
The ending of season 2, episode 5, "Hometown Hero," finds Charlie Cale setting up Simon Rex's washed-up baseball pitcher, Russ "Rocket" Waddell, to throw the pitch of his life. After Charlie uncovered Gaby Hoffman's Fran as the killer of Kumail Nanjiani's Gator Joe in Poker Face season 2, episode 4, she hit the road from Florida and found herself becoming a ball girl for a local minor league baseball team. Throughout the second season 2 of Poker Face, Charlie has solved all sorts of killings, both premeditated, like in Poker Face season 2, episode 2, and accidental, as in Poker Face season 2, episode 3.
"Hometown Hero" starts with Charlie getting accidentally hit by a baseball in a building outside the stadium, which brings her inside the world of Russ "Rocket" Waddell's minor league baseball team in Montgomery, Alabama. The team is so bad that to each make a small fortune. Russ and his teammate nearly get away with it before newcomer pitching phenom Felix Domingo finds Russ's notebook that breaks down the plan. After Felix insults Russ by saying he blew his shot at the big leagues, Russ fires a heater at his head, killing him instantly.

The cast of Poker Face season 2, episode 5 is led by Natasha Lyonne's signature lie-detecting character, Charlie Cale. Simon Rex, known for recent films such as Red Rocket and Blink Twice, stars as the episode's killer, Russ "Rocket" Waddell. Steve Buscemi returns for a voice cameo as Good Buddy, whom Charlie has a brief conversation with at the start of the episode. Other notable actors who made their Poker Face debut include , who played Sheriff Parker in Poker Face season 1, returns as Lew Dundee in season 2.

Perhaps the greatest achievement of Poker Face season 2 is that, despite its obvious and steadfast algorithmic structure, there's never a dull moment.

Before Russ was exposed as Felix's killer, it was believed that an old faulty pitching machine was the culprit, exactly as Russ had framed it to be. After hearing that Lucille was likely facing a wrongful death lawsuit, Charlie takes action and starts looking into what else could have possibly happened. , which is the case, but Russ smartly switched out to avoid detection. After Charlie hears on the local news that someone won $3 million hitting an improbable parlay against the Cheesemongers team, she connects it to a baseball player's new "grillz."

The first episode of Poker Face season 2 features several new characters, primarily Cynthia Erivo in multiple roles, and the return of Charlie Cale.
After Charlie uncovers the spiked gum incident, she figures out that a group of Cheesemonger teammates were the ones who threw the game and won the massive bet. In Felix's coroner's report, Charlie notices that the ball that killed Felix was traveling at a speed of at least 100 MPH. When Charlie double-checks the faulty ball machine, nicknamed Rambo, she discovers that it can barely propel a baseball faster than 83 MPH. when he says, "Like you said, my fastball's gone and it's not coming back." Charlie calls "BS" and suspects that Russ threw the ball that killed Felix.

Before Charlie gets Russ to confess to throwing some games and "cashing in on his own failure," she accidentally takes some of the LSD-spiked gum. This sends her on a strange trip that is seemingly full of random visuals and moments, but ends up playing a key role in Charlie knowing that Felix was high during and after his last baseball game. While Felix claimed that he was going to quit baseball and go find God, Charlie encountered B.J. Novack's Hiram Lubinski in an apparent vision. Hiram tells Charlie, "It's up to you to save this ballpark and this team." Hiram was the inventor of the cheese spreadthat gave the team its name, .

At the end of Poker Face season 2, episode 5, Charlie tells Russ straight up that she has him figured out. With the spiked gum, thrown games, and everything else considered, she concludes that Russ did find his fastball again and used it to kill Felix. and that he's about to go prove to an entire stadium of people that he's washed up in his final baseball game.
It's unclear whether Russ gets out of it by the end of Poker Face season 2, episode 5, but he's certainly made himself Felix's number one murder suspect.
Charlie, however, convinces Russ that an MLB scout has come to see him play, which makes him bring his best stuff. When he throws a 101 MPH fastball, he thinks it's his ticket to The Show. However, Charlie set him up, and the scout was an undercover cop. It seems like Russ was allowed to finish the inning, maybe even the game, before being detained by local police. It's unclear whether Russ gets out of it by the end of season 2, episode 5, but he's certainly made himself Felix's top murder suspect. All he can do is tip his hat to Charlie.
