Initial reports indicated that a regional jet with American Airlines crashed into the Potomac River after colliding with an Army Blackhawk helicopter while approaching the runway, according to NBC affiliate WESH.

Multiple fireboats were on scene Wednesday night, and several other first responders were heading to the scene.

Authorities said rescue teams were searching for as many as 60 people who were on board the plane. At least two bodies were recovered from the river, WESH reported.

American Airlines released the following statement:

“We’re aware of reports that American Eagle flight 5342, operated by PSA, with service from Wichita, Kansas (ICT) to Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA) has been involved in an incident. We will provide information as it becomes available.”

No other information was immediately available.
