Phoenix Suns New GM Expresses Loyalty

Brian Gregory was introduced as the new general manager of the Phoenix Suns, succeeding James Jones, who was demoted to a senior advisor role. The change comes after a disappointing 2024-25 season, prompting significant organizational adjustments, including the firing of head coach Mike Budenholzer.

During his introductory press conference, Gregory emphasized his close alignment with Suns' majority owner Mat Ishbia. He stated that his primary responsibility is to oversee the basketball operations and execute Ishbia's vision for the team. Gregory highlighted Ishbia's desire to implement changes and establish a unique identity for the Suns, differentiating them from other NBA teams.

Gregory stressed the importance of open communication with players moving forward. He believes that collaboration and staying connected with the team are crucial for success in the NBA. However, the specific identity that Ishbia and Gregory aim to cultivate for the Phoenix Suns remains undefined.

Gregory said, "Mat and I are a team... we are completely aligned... I report to Mat Ishbia."

Gregory added, "One of the things he talked about was doing things different and making some changes, not being the same as everybody else. It’s about building that alignment, it’s about creating that identity and it’s about executing that vision... For me, that’s why I’m here. To do exactly that. To execute that vision."

Gregory also commented, "No one’s going to out-work me... [Ishbia and I] are going to think differently, we’re going to be unified in our approach on a daily basis. And when you do that, then the results speak for themselves."

Gregory stated further that, "That collaborative effort within the NBA is becoming more and more crucial for success... If you’re not in touch with [the players] and communicating with them, I think it can put you in a difficult spot."
