Peace Council to boost religious tolerance in High Schools
The National Peace Council (NPC) has announced plans to launch a document aimed at addressing religious discrimination in Senior High Schools (SHS).
The communique which is awaiting final approval from the Ghana Education Service is expected to among others things, uphold the freedom of religion as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.
Speaking to Citi News, Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council, George Amoh noted that the document will be a guide in fostering religious coexistence in senior high schools.
“Following the 2015 issue that came up around the hijab, the Peace Council facilitated dialogues with all the religious leaders in the country, particularly those who were into mission schools. So we were able to come up at that time, 2015, with a 10-point communique. We couldn’t fully implement them for several reasons, including money. But when the issue of Wesley Girls came up, we thought we should revisit that campaign.
“And we have succeeded in getting all the mission schools and Ghana Education Service to buy into an MoU that will guide behaviour, religious behaviour in our secondary schools across the country.”
