MTN South Africa Launches Low-Cost Smartphone Initiative

MTN South Africa is launching a significant initiative to boost 4G adoption by providing affordable smartphones to 1.2 million prepaid customers. These handsets, priced from 99 rand (approximately US$5.42), are designed to facilitate the nationwide transition from legacy 2G and 3G networks to faster, more efficient 4G services.
This move is part of MTN’s broader strategy to prepare its user base for the eventual shutdown of 2G and 3G networks, scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. By promoting early adoption of 4G-compatible devices, MTN aims to ensure a smoother digital transition and expand mobile internet access for lower-income users.
An MTN South Africa spokesperson stated, "Digital inclusion is a key priority. We want to make sure that no customer is left behind as we modernise our network and deliver faster, more reliable connectivity."
The affordable smartphones will be bundled with MTN’s prepaid offerings, enabling users to leverage voice and data services over 4G, which offers significantly improved performance compared to older network technologies. The campaign also includes educational support to assist first-time smartphone users in navigating the features and capabilities of 4G.
South Africa’s mobile operators have been steadily working toward network modernisation, with the national regulator, ICASA, encouraging the reallocation of spectrum and the phasing out of outdated technologies. MTN’s initiative aligns with these efforts, targeting millions who still rely on basic feature phones for communication.
With this campaign, MTN aims to bridge the digital divide and pave the way for a more connected, digitally empowered society ahead of the 2027 deadline.
