Paul Pogba and Other Free Agents Manchester United Can Sign To Save Amorim's Season

There is no denying that Ruben Amorim has found the going tough at Manchester United, with the defeat at Tottenham his eighth in 14 Premier League games.

The former Sporting Lisbon manager arrived in England last year full of promise, looking to inject fresh impetus into a side that had seemingly stalled under Erik ten Hag.

However, it has been a case of two steps forward, one step backwards, with his reign at Old Trafford largely inconsistent.

The wins away at Manchester City and Arsenal and the draw at Anfield will surely rank highly on his CV, but the losses against the likes of Bournemouth, Wolves and Brighton take the shine away from those huge wins.

The situation has been made weaker by the alarming growing list of injuries at the club. 12 first-team players missed the Sunday game in North London, with Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou understanding his situation all too well.

"There’s definitely a few. I could see Ruben there, players out of position, kids on the bench. Well, welcome to my world. But that's for one game. Now do that for two months. Do that for two months. Any club. Do that for two months," he said as captured by Hayters TV.

With the transfer window closed, the club can only sign free agents to come in and attempt to save the situation. The only problem with free agents is most of them haven't played in a long time and could take weeks to be match fit - a luxury Amorim doesn't have.

looks at some of the free agents United could look at if push comes to shove.

Talk of familiar faces. Is Paul Pogba 3.0 possible? Pogba's return to Turin didn't go as planned as a knee injury and later a doping ban forced Juventus to terminate his contract.

In his prime, Pogba was considered one of the best midfielders of his generation, though he struggled to show that consistently at United. At 31 years of age, he could be enticed by the prospect of rebuilding his career at one of his former homes.

The Red Devils have spent ridiculous amounts of money in recent years on forwards. Their current attack line of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have only five Premier League goals between them this season and could use the experience of Diego Costa.

The bullish striker was released by Gremio last season. He is a two-time Premier League winner as the lead striker and could offer much-needed experience up front.

The concerns would, however, be with his age and how he performed last time he was in the Premier League with Wolves.

With Lisandro Martinez ruled out for the rest of the year, Amorim could turn to Serge Aurier. Released by Galatasaray last season, the Ivorian can play as a wingback in the preferred 3-5-2 formation or one of the three centre-backs.

The market of free agents is currently dry, but when you have a bench full of academy players, you might be tempted to cast your net and see who you will land. United are currently in 15th place, 12 points above the relegation zone.
