Passenger, 76, killed in Sioux Falls crash witnessed by officer

SIOUX FALLS — One person had died following a two-vehicle crash in Sioux Falls.
Shortly after 5 p.m. Friday, June 27, a Sioux Falls police officer was on routine patrol near Madison Street and Kiwanis Avenue when they witnessed a two-vehicle crash.
According to Sgt. Travis Olsen, a Chevy Silverado occupied by a 71-year-old male had entered Madison Street from a private drive on the south side of the road.
At the same time, a Honda CRV driven by a 53-year-old female with two passengers — a 76-year-old female in the front passenger seat and a 76-year-old male in the rear passenger seat —was traveling eastbound on Madison Street. The front of both vehicles collided in the eastbound lanes.
Upon witnessing the crash, the police officer immediately rendered aid while awaiting first responders.
The 76-year-old male in the back seat of the Honda was pronounced dead at a Sioux Falls hospital. The three surviving parties all suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Olsen said that speed and impairment do not appear to be a factor in the crash, but that seat belt use is under investigation.
Names of those involved have not yet been released, pending family notification.
