Paresh Rawal Exits Hera Pheri 3, Akshay Kumar Allegedly Sues

The upcoming Hera Pheri 3 has been a topic of discussion, largely due to unexpected off-screen drama. Akshay Kumar has initiated legal proceedings against Paresh Rawal, seeking damages of Rs 25 crore. This action follows Rawal's withdrawal from the film, despite an existing contract, creating potential setbacks and monetary issues for the production.
Kumar's production company, Cape of Good Films, has reportedly cited "unprofessional conduct" as the basis for the lawsuit. Rawal's decision to leave after production commenced is viewed as a breach of his contractual obligations. This marks a rare instance in Akshay Kumar's career where he has resorted to legal measures against a fellow actor. Kumar acquired the rights to Hera Pheri 3 from Firoz Nadiadwala and had already invested in the film when Rawal's departure created complications.
Paresh Rawal addressed his exit via social media, dispelling rumors of creative differences with the director. He stated, "I wish to put it on record that my decision to step away from Hera Pheri 3 was not due to creative differences... I hold immense love, respect, and faith in Mr. Priyadarshan the film director." Despite his denial of creative conflicts, reports suggest Rawal simply "did not feel like being a part of the film." This decision came after he had already filmed scenes with Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty.
Rawal's history includes similar exits from other projects, such as Billu Barber and his decision not to participate in Oh My God 2, citing dissatisfaction with the script. He has also expressed critical views on sequels, contrasting the Hera Pheri sequels unfavorably with Lage Raho Munna Bhai, noting a tendency to "cook up the same thing" and a lack of creativity in sequels.
Paresh Rawal has firmly stated that he opted out of Hera Pheri 3 because he doesn't feel connected to the project anymore, clarifying that his decision wasn't influenced by creative disagreements or remuneration concerns. He emphasized his respect for director Priyadarshan and his co-stars, Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty, but asserted his choice to prioritize roles that resonate with him personally.
Suniel Shetty also expressed surprise and confusion regarding Paresh Rawal's departure, noting that even Akshay Kumar was unaware of Rawal's reasons. Shetty described the situation as a "crisis," given that the film was already in progress, with a promo shot and plans for further filming underway.
Rawal confirmed that he had informed Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty about his decision and that Priyadarshan had attempted to persuade him to reconsider, but ultimately respected his choice.
The original Hera Pheri, directed by Priyadarshan in 2000, introduced the iconic trio of Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, and Suniel Shetty. Its success led to the sequel, Phir Hera Pheri in 2006, directed by Neeraj Vora. The franchise is known for its humor and characters, especially Paresh Rawal's Baburao Apte, achieving a cult following.
