Pahalgam Terror Attack: US Issues Travel Advisory, Impact on Film Release and Bank Stock

Following a recent terror attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people, mostly tourists, the United States State Department has issued a 'Do Not Travel' advisory for Jammu and Kashmir. The advisory cites potential terror attacks and violent unrest within the Union Territory, particularly near the India-Pakistan border. This marks the deadliest attack in the region since the Pulwama strike in 2019.
The US advisory specifically warns US citizens against travel to Jammu and Kashmir, excluding visits to the eastern Ladakh region and its capital, Leh. The advisory highlights the sporadic nature of violence in the area, noting its prevalence along the Line of Control (LOC) between India and Pakistan and in tourist spots like Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam. US citizens are also advised to avoid areas within 10 kilometers of the India-Pakistan border due to the potential for armed conflict.
In response to the Pahalgam terror attack, India has reportedly suspended the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 and announced the downgrading of diplomatic ties with Pakistan, including the expulsion of military attaches. These actions are attributed to the cross-border links to the terror attack.
The attack has also had repercussions in the entertainment industry. The upcoming Hindi film Abir Gulaal, starring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, has faced opposition and calls for a ban from various film governing bodies and political organizations. Ashoke Pandit, President of the Indian Film & Television Directors' Association, has strongly opposed the film's release, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the nation over artistic collaborations with Pakistanis. Similar sentiments have been echoed by BN Tiwari, President of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), who has vowed to prevent the film's release in India.
Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has also voiced its opposition to the film, with Ameya Khopkar, the president of the MNS' cinema wing, stating that the party will not allow the release of Abir Gulaal in Maharashtra. Fawad Khan has condemned the terror attack and expressed his condolences to the victims and their families.
The Pahalgam terror attack has also impacted the stock market. Jammu and Kashmir Bank experienced a 10% decline in its stock value due to the decrease in tourism following the attack. The region relies heavily on tourism for revenue, and the attack has led to many visitors cutting short their trips.
