Oyo Assembly calls for integration of health education into secondary schools
Oyo State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, advocated for the integration of mental health education, counselling services, and structured support systems in primary and secondary schools across the state.
The motion, moved by the lawmaker representing Ibadan North State Constituency I, Comforter Olajide, was seconded by the member representing Oyo East/West State Constituency, Rahman Olorunpoto, in a sitting presided over by the Speaker, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin.
The motion proposes a comprehensive reform of the school system’s approach to mental health, including the integration of mental health education into school curricula, the deployment of professional counsellors across public schools, and the establishment of mental health awareness clubs and campaigns.
The lawmakers also suggested training teachers on early signs of emotional and behavioural distress and ensuring students identified as at-risk are covered under the State Health Insurance Scheme.
The motion cites recent findings that one in six Nigerian youths between the ages of 15 and 24 experience depression and anxiety, emphasising the need for urgent action to address the issue.
The lawmakers noted that mental health is a vital aspect of students’ well-being and academic performance, yet it remains largely neglected.
The House urged the Executive Arm of Government to implement the proposed measures to support students’ mental health and well-being, as well as behavioural changes.
