Over 400 Nigerian Editors Convene in Enugu for NGE Biennial Meeting

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) is set to host its Biennial National Convention in Enugu from June 26 to 29, 2025. This significant event, themed “Building a Secure and Cohesive Nigeria: The Role of Dialogue, Inclusion and the Media,” aims to gather over 400 editors from across the country to deliberate on critical issues pertaining to national cohesion and the media’s indispensable role in fostering a secure Nigeria.

The convention will feature a robust lineup of key figures and stakeholders. Alhaji Mohammed Idris Malagi, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, will officially declare the convention open. Dr. Peter Mbah, the Executive Governor of Enugu State, will serve as the Chief Host, while Dr. John Momoh, Chairman of Channels Television, will chair the proceedings. Esteemed media veterans including Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, Publisher of Vanguard; Chief Olusegun Osoba; and Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, former Presidential Spokesman, have been assigned honorary roles as Fathers of the Day. Prince Nduka Obaigbena, Chairman/Editor-in-Chief of THISDAY/Arise News Channel, is also among the prominent media personalities expected to participate.

A major highlight of the convention will be the keynote address delivered by Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) or State Security Services (SSS). His address is titled “Nation’s Security Future: Harnessing Diversity for Peace/Stability and the Media’s Role.” Additionally, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser (NSA), is slated to attend as a Special Guest, underscoring the high-level engagement expected at the event.

The NGE emphasized that the convention’s theme reflects the profound importance of leveraging Nigeria's rich national diversity as a source of strength, creativity, and innovation, thereby fostering peace and inclusion. The Guild highlighted the media’s crucial responsibility in promoting tolerance, understanding, and dialogue, and in combating detrimental elements such as hate speech, misinformation, and stereotypes through constructive storytelling and robust public engagement. It also stressed that inclusive governance, which ensures all segments of society are represented in decision-making processes, is vital for national stability.

Beyond the insightful deliberations and policy discussions, the three-day convention will culminate in the election of new executives. These elected officials will be tasked with steering the affairs of the Nigerian Guild of Editors for the subsequent two-year term. The convention stands as a testament to the media industry’s unwavering commitment to upholding professional standards, promoting national unity, and ensuring democratic accountability in Nigeria.
