Osun Amotekun corps denies arresting traditional chiefs, party members

Published 1 day ago2 minute read

The Amotekun Security Corps in Osun State has refuted reports alleging that its operatives arrested members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and traditional chiefs in the Itapa community of Atakumosa East Local Council.

The Corps described the reports as false and misleading, asserting that the claims were a deliberate attempt to politicise security matters and sow tension within the community.

In a statement released yesterday, the spokesperson for the Corps, Yusuf Abass, denied any such arrests. “The Osun State Amotekun Corps has been made aware of a malicious and false report titled: ‘Osun Amotekun Begins Massive Arrest of APC Members in Atakumosa,’ which falsely alleges that traditional chiefs in Itapa, Atakumosa East Local Council were arrested and detained by Corps operatives,” he said.

Abass stressed: “We want to make it clear that no member of the Amotekun Corps detained any community chief in Itapa or elsewhere in Atakumosa East. The accusations in the report are entirely untrue, unfounded, and intended to undermine the integrity, impartiality, and professionalism of the Osun Amotekun Corps.”

The Corps further noted that the report appeared to be a calculated effort to mislead the public. “This is not only dangerous but can also incite distrust, tension, and unnecessary panic within the community,” Abass warned.

Urging the public to disregard the allegations, the statement reiterated the Corps’ commitment to safeguarding life and property without bias “regardless of their political affiliation, religious beliefs, or social standing.”

The Corps also cautioned against disseminating unverified and harmful information, calling on media outlets and individuals to act responsibly. “Security issues should never be trivialised or politicised,” Abass concluded.
