The headmaster of Opoku Ware School in Kumasi, Rev. Fr. Stephen Owusu Sekyere, has noted that in the 21st century, digital skills are particularly important if young people are to be properly equipped to face global challenges and opportunities and to maximise their potential.
Rev Fr Sekyere, who is also the national chairman of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), made these remarks on Friday morning when he received on behalf of the school, 110 laptop computers together with 108 computer desks and chairs donated by the USA-based Hulede Foundation, run by an old boy of the school, Katakyie Johhny Hulede (Z7).
The headmaster expressed the school’s profound gratitude to Kat. Hulede and assured him that the school will take very good care of the equipment to enable them serve their purpose.
The Global President of the alumni of the school (Akatakyie), Kat. Mike Adu Domfeh (AB146) stated the Akatakyie have over the years prioritised the needs of the school as its way of giving back to help younger generations, and expressed the pride of Akatakyie for the wonderful gesture by the Hulede Foundation. He expressed the hope that other Akatakyie will be inspired to come to the school’s aid.
In his remarks, Kat. Johnny Hulede encouraged to take their studies seriously and be focused on their life purpose, never wavering from God. He further traced his career path, including the blessings and opportunities that come his way, reiterating his firm belief in reaching out to others to help them.
Kat. Hulede has undertaken the refurbishment of the school’s IT centre to make it fit for purpose. These works include installation of burglar-proof facilities and painting, computer desks and chairs among others. He also pledged responsibility for the centre’s viability, including but not limited to, maintenance both of the centre and the equipment.
In recognition of this enormous gesture, the school’s IT centre located in its ‘Sun City’ classroom block, was formally inaugurated as the Kat. Johnny Hulede (Z7) IT Centre in his honour.
The Hulede Foundation was set up in 2018 in the name of Mr. Patrick Hulede of blessed memory, the first head of the KNUST Printing Press by his two sons Patrick and John, with a mission to create opportunities for the underprivileged in order to better their lives, especially in the education sector.
