Open Letter to Afenyo-Markin: When you pray for Ghana to fail, what kind of leadership do you offer?
Alexander Afenyo-Markin is the MP for Effutu and Minority Leader in Parliament
Dear Alexander Afenyo-Markin,
I write to you not in anger, but in deep sorrow, sorrow for what our politics has become, and for what you, a senior figure in Parliament and Minority Leader, recently said in a video now circulating widely on social media.
In that video, you are heard expressing a wish for the ruling government’s downfall, so that your party, the very same that was voted out for its failures, can return to power. And I ask you, respectfully but firmly: what kind of democratic leadership prays for national collapse just to win an election?
This is not leadership. It is the very definition of toxic partisanship. A democracy becomes dangerous when political actors no longer fight to build a nation, but instead fight to break it, so they can return and continue the cycle of create, loot, and share.
What exactly do you want to return to power to do?
To continue the plundering of public funds? To bring back the corruption-ridden sole sourcing deals? To protect party cronies while our environment and water bodies are destroyed through Galamsey? To burden the youth with unemployment and hopelessness, while the political elite enrich themselves?
You had eight years to lead, and you left the country bleeding profusely, from the economy to the environment, from trust in governance to the very soul of public service. And now, instead of helping to rebuild, you stand in Parliament and sit in party meetings publicly praying for the new government to fail?
This is not patriotism. This is not a responsible opposition. This is a betrayal of Ghana.
You see, our democracy is fragile, not because we vote every four years, but because too many in leadership play this zero-sum game, where the people’s pain becomes your political capital. And so you wait in the shadows, cheering for hardship, hoping that hunger and anger will drive the masses back to your doorstep.
But Ghana is not a tool. It is not a means to a political end. It is a nation that deserves better.
Ghanaians must now confront this truth: a party that destroys and loots, then prays for the collapse of the next government, is not fit to lead. If your only path to power is paved with the people’s pain, then your victory will be the nation’s greatest defeat.
This letter is not just to you, Afenyo-Markin. It is to all Ghanaians, especially the youth. We must reject this politics of sabotage, of destruction, of selfish ambition. We must rise above it and demand leaders who don’t just seek power but serve purpose.
The NPP needs a complete rebirth with a new leadership and a fresh vision that truly resonates with the needs and aspirations of the Ghanaian people. The current leadership has not only failed in government but continues to fail even in opposition.
For Ghana.
Shalom shalom!
