Onitiri urges restraint from Atiku, El-Rufai, Obi ahead of 2027 elections
Elder statesman, Chief Adesunbo Onitiri, has cautioned former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, against actions or statements that could heighten political tensions in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued in Lagos on Saturday, Onitiri described the trio as influential national figures whose conduct could significantly impact Nigeria’s political environment.
He advised them to adopt a more measured and collaborative approach in addressing national issues.
“As one of the original democrats who risked our lives during the 1993–1994 struggle against military rule, we cannot sit idly by while some politicians create openings for anti-democratic forces to exploit,” Onitiri said.
He voiced particular concern over Atiku’s reported efforts to seek judicial intervention in the United States against President Bola Tinubu’s eligibility to contest the 2027 elections.
According to Onitiri, such a move is “unnecessary and unacceptable to most Nigerians.”
“The opposition should allow the President to focus on governance and the delivery of democratic dividends,” he added. “We committed democrats will not fold our arms while our people suffer from hunger and insecurity.”
Onitiri stressed the need for political actors across party lines to prioritize national stability over partisan rivalry.
He urged both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition leaders to collaborate in addressing the country’s ongoing economic and security concerns.
“The Federal Government is making efforts to address the inherited economic and security issues since taking office in 2023. What is needed now is cooperation, not division,” he said.
Onitiri’s remarks come amid increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 elections, with several prominent figures hinting at their intentions and strategies. His intervention reflects growing calls among stakeholders for a more conciliatory and constructive political climate.
