The DCI has obtained images of a man suspected to be linked to the fatal shooting of the Kasipul MP on Wednesday, April 30.
According to a report by Citizen TV, detectives traced the MP’s movements from the time he left Parliament at around 7 pm, when there was heavy traffic in Nairobi’s CBD.
CCTV footage later showed Were's vehicle parked near an M-Pesa shop, where his bodyguard was seen exiting the car to deposit KSh 20,000 on his behalf.
The surveillance footage also captured a man closely monitoring Were along Wabera Road in Nairobi shortly before the fatal shooting.
The individual, carrying a bag, was seen walking past the MP’s vehicle multiple times, appearing to study him, possibly to confirm his identity.
At approximately 7:19 pm, the bodyguard returned to the car after depositing money for the Kasipul MP.
The vehicle then proceeded through Kenyatta Avenue toward Valley Road, with the suspect later seen trailing them on a motorbike.
Around 7:40 pm the MP’s vehicle stopped at a roundabout to observe traffic regulations. It was there that the assailant pulled up beside the car, approached the passenger side—where Were sat—drew a firearm, and opened fire.
One shot shattered the window, while three bullets struck the MP in the chest and arm.
The suspect then returned to the motorbike and fled. Investigators later recovered three spent cartridges at the scene. The DCI has since questioned the MP’s driver, bodyguard, and the M-Pesa agent to gather more details surrounding the events of that evening.
In another disturbing development surrounding the killing of MP Were, his bodyguard broke his silence, sharing a harrowing account of the night his employer was fatally shot.

The guard said the attacker struck with deadly accuracy, catching the trained guard unprepared and unable to intervene in time.
Despite prior threats and heightened security concerns, Were was ultimately cornered in what investigators called a well-orchestrated hit.
Recalling the ambush, the bodyguard, who had been seated in the rear seat of the vehicle, described the assault as lightning-fast and entirely unexpected, leaving him momentarily paralysed.
Detectives believe the assassins used a motorcycle to their advantage, navigating traffic with ease and fleeing the scene undetected.
According to investigators, the killers were aware that the MP had recently switched cars—a precaution meant to bolster his safety, but one that tragically proved ineffective.
