The purchase of motor vehicles and motorcycles for the security outfit saw no budgetary performance.

The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has overlooked the local security outfit, Amotekun, in the state's 2024 budget while the office of the executive governor spent N3.7billion on vehicle purchases.

A review of Ogun State's budget documents reveals that between January and September 2024, no funds were allocated for maintaining Amotekun’s vehicles, office furniture, generators, or other essential supplies.

Although N103 million was budgeted for Amotekun’s security services, only N10million was spent. Similarly, out of the N74.6 million set aside for security operations, N8million was utilised.

The purchase of motor vehicles and motorcycles for the security outfit saw no budgetary performance.

Capital expenditure on critical items such as power generators, JAC Hilux vehicles, Bajaj motorcycles, desktop computers, printers, photocopiers, inverters, safety tools, and the rehabilitation of Amotekun’s office complex also recorded 0% performance.

Despite sidelining Amotekun, the state government spent N3.7 billion on vehicle purchases in 2024, all procured through the governor’s office.

The total budget for vehicle acquisitions was N10.58 billion, continuing a trend from 2023, when N2.16 billion was spent on similar purchases.

Among the vehicles acquired were Toyota Fortuners, according to budget records.

This spending comes amid rising insecurity in Ogun State and the wider southwestern region, marked by incidents of kidnapping and violence.

In July 2024, a rice farmer, Taiwo Paul, was murdered by suspected herders in the Kata area of Ewekoro Local Government.

In February, the Ogun State Police Command launched an investigation into arson allegedly carried out by cattle herders who set fire to a cassava farm in Adao Village, near Alabata in Abeokuta.

According to the state police spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, the complainant, Ogunbayo Adewale, reported that on February 19, 2025, he found his 35-acre cassava farm burned down, with cattle grazing on the land and cassava plants uprooted.
