The men's USA Basketball Tokyo Olympics competition begins July 25 — two days after the Opening Ceremony in Tokyo — with 12 countries competing in the initial Group Phase.
Team USA will play in Group A against France, Iran and Czech Republic in order to qualify for the single-elimination Final Phase that begins on Aug. 3.
All games will be played in Saitama Super Arena.

The 12 men's squads competing for gold in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics will look very familiar to NBA followers, with such players as Luka Dončić (Slovenia), Rudy Gobert and Nicolas Batum (France), Nico Mannion (Italy), Moritz Wagner (Germany), Patty Mills and Josh Green (Australia), Rui Hachimura and Yuta Watanabe (Japan); and Marc Gasol and Ricky Rubio (Spain) all currently on rosters.
USA Basketball, under the direction of head coach Gregg Popovich, is led by Kevin Durant, Draymond Green and Bradley Beal.
But the USA roster is subject to change as three of the players are with the two teams seeking the NBA championship: Devin Booker (Phoenix Suns) and Jrue Holiday and Khris Middleton (Milwaukee Bucks).
The NBA Finals are scheduled for July 6-22 (if seven games are needed).
Opening ceremonies for the Tokyo Olympics will be held on July 23. Men’s basketball is scheduled to begin July 25 and run through Aug. 7.
Team USA will assemble for training camp (July 6-18) in Las Vegas and play exhibition games against Spain, Australia, Nigeria and Argentina before leaving for Tokyo.
The team is scheduled to begin Olympic play July 25 against France, then Iran July 28 and July 31 versus an opponent to be named.
Team USA men's team is attempting to win its fourth straight gold medal following success in Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016.
The 12-team field was set for men’s basketball after the final spots were secured in qualifying tournaments on Sunday (July 4) under the auspices of FIBA, the world governing body for basketball.
The U.S. women’s team is seeking its seventh consecutive gold medal, dating back to 1996 Atlanta.
The U.S. is seeking its fourth straight gold medal and is ranked No. 1 in the world by FIBA.
NBA Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert (Utah Jazz) leads the French team, which will make its third straight appearance in the Olympics. The squad also includes Batum, (Los Angeles Clippers), Evan Fournier (Boston Celtics), Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot (Brooklyn Nets) and Frank Ntilikina (New York Knicks).
Czech Republic qualified for its first Olympic Games after a win over Greece in the FIBA qualifying tournament in Canada. The team features Chicago Bulls guard Tomas Satoransky.
Iran will compete in men’s basketball at the Olympics for the third time in its history after earning its spot as the highest-ranked Asian team at the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup. The Iranians last reached the Olympic Games in 2008, and also competed in 1948.
The team will make its 13th consecutive appearance in the Olympic men’s basketball field, dating back to 1968.
NBA players include Mills (San Antonio Spurs, competing in his fourth consecutive Olympics), Joe Ingles (Utah Jazz), Aron Baynes (Toronto Raptors), Josh Green (Dallas Mavericks) and Cleveland Cavaliers guards Dante Exum and Matthew Dellavedova,(Cleveland Cavaliers).
Ben Simmons (Philadelphia 76ers) withdrew from the Australian Olympic team to focus on “individual skill development.”
Australia is ranked third in the world by FIBA behind the U.S. and Spain.
Golden State Warriors assistant Mike Brown leads the Nigerian national team, which will make its third straight appearance in the Olympics.
According to the Nigerian Basketball Federation, the final roster will be named July 17. Potential NBA players include Josh Okogie (Minnesota Timberwolves), Precious Achiuwa (Miami Heat) and Monte Morris (Denver Nuggets).
Italy secured its first Olympic berth since 2004 when the team captured a silver medal at the Athens Games. NBA players include Nico Mannion (Golden State Warriors) and Nicolo Melli (Dallas Mavericks).
Germany is back in the Olympic field for the first time since 2008. NBA players include Moritz Wagner (Orlando Magic) and Isaac Bonga (Washington Wizards).
Argentina returns to the Olympics under head coach Sergio Hernandez, who coached the team at the 2008 Beijing (bronze medal) and 2016 Rio Olympics. The squad is led by a trio of NBA players: Facundo Campazzo (Denver Nuggets), Gabriel Deck (Oklahoma City Thunder) and Luca Vildoza (New York Knicks).
Argentina won the gold at the Athens Games in 2004. The team is currently ranked fourth in the world by FIBA.
Japan will make its first Olympic appearance since 1976 after qualifying as the host of this summer’s Games. Toronto Raptors forward Watanabe and Washington Wizards forward Hachimura are featured NBA players.
Spain won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Games and silver medals at 2012 London and 2008 Bejing.
Players with NBA experience include Pau Gasol (20-year NBA vet who is on his fourth Olympic team), Marc Gasol (Los Angeles Lakers), Willy Hernangomez (New Orleans Pelicans), Juancho Hernangomez (Minnesota Timberwolves) and Rubio l(Minnesota Timberwolves).
Spain is currently ranked No. 2 in the FIBA World Rankings behind the U.S.
Dallas Mavericks All-Star Dončić led Slovenia to its first Olympic Games by defeating Lithuania, 96-85, in the finals of the FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament in Lithuania, posting a 31-point triple-double.
