The National Organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Henry Nana Boakye popularly known as Nana B has served notice that the party will fiercely resist any form of harassment of its members by the government.

His comment comes after the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, was arrested and detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after reporting to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

On Monday, May 26, 2025, he reported to the CID, where he was formally charged with engaging in illegal mining activities.

According to a police statement signed by Superintendent Joseph Benefo Darkwah, Head of the Public Affairs Unit at the CID, the NPP regional chairman was cautioned over alleged involvement in unauthorised mining operations, pollution of water bodies, and entering a forest reserve without permission.

The police confirmed that Chairman Wontumi cooperated fully with investigators, provided his statement, and was subsequently granted bail with two sureties.
His detention by EOCO comes in the wake of a failed attempt by security operatives to arrest him on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Commenting on Wontumi's arrest in an interview with the media at the EOCO premises, Nana B said the party has resolved to ensure its members who are invited by any state investigative agency avail themselves and assist with the probe.

However, what the party will not tolerate is deliberate government sponsored harassment of party supporters.

“We will cooperate lawfully with any form of investigation. We have said it time without number that we are going to cooperate. But for the government to subject people to such political harassment, intimidation, we are not going to allow it.”

He stated that the party will in the coming days initiate action to express its displeasure over such harassments.

"Trust me we are not going to sit down, we are not going to allow this political intimidation and harassment to go on. In the come days you will hear from us. If you have an overwhelming endorsement from the people it doesn't mean you have to harass the people. You invite somebody, the person honours the invitation and right afterwards just at the premises he is picked up as if he is a common thief."
