Dr Edward Omane Boamah slams NPP for prioritising political power over the welfare of Ghanaians

The Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for a perceived prioritisation of political power over the welfare of Ghanaians.

According to him, the NPP's main focus has been to secure power instead of serving the interests of the Ghanaian people.

In a citinewsroom.com report on June 18, 2025, Dr Omane Boamah suggested that the NPP has strayed from its original promise to serve citizens.

"The Competent Economic Management Team did enough damage to pensioners, people with disabilities, women, the youth, and Ghanaians in general in six short months. Instead of sincerely apologising for their misdeeds, they are focusing on the next elections," he added.

Dr Omane Boamah stated that the party appears more concerned with securing power, raising questions about the NPP's commitment to the well-being of Ghanaians.

He slammed the party for scheduling its presidential primaries earlier than usual in preparation for the 2028 general elections.

This decision was made during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Accra on June 17.

He noted that the NPP has shown no remorse for the economic and social hardships Ghanaians endured under its administration.

He accused the NPP of prioritising its self-interest over national progress, stating, "The NPP thinks only of themselves and the next elections."

He suggested that the NDC remains the better "the Alternative..." which, in his estimation, promotes people-centered governance.

Reacting to Dr Omane Boamah’s utterances, Haruna Mohammed, the Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, sought to justify the decision to hold early primaries.

He said that it will allow the party's eventual candidate enough time to engage with key constituencies and build momentum for the upcoming 2028 elections.

In an interview with Channel One Newsroom on June 18, 2025, Haruna stated that the new date for the primaries, January 31, 2026, aligns with recommendations from the party's constitutional review process.

"It is going to market the candidate enough with regards to us being able to get in contact with the international community, the business community, and the various stakeholders across the length and breadth of the world," he explained.

Haruna added that the early primaries are intended to help the party shift its focus from internal matters to national mobilisation, which is especially crucial given the NPP's current minority status in Parliament.
