Not being enthused about the Cedi appreciation is 'narcissistic' - Van Vicker

In a Facebook post on May 28, 2025 Van Vicker expressed disappointment in Ghanaians living abroad who are not pleased with the strengthening of the Cedi against the dollar.

While praising the President for the Cedi gains, Van Vicker expressed his optimism that the appreciation of the Cedi would be sustainable.

“Regrettably some Ghanaians living abroad are not enthused because the dollar has dropped against the cedis. How narcissistic can one be?

“I think the current cedis orbit is remarkable for Ghana as a country and I am optimistic it’s sustainable.

“This is not a political statement. It is an acknowledgement of a good job done so far. Call a spade a spade. Give credit to whom credit is due,” Van Vicker wrote on Facebook.

Van Vicker noted that a number of factors, such as changes in the global economy, reduced government spending, lawsuits against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, and an increase in the circulation of dollars, could be responsible for the cedi’s appreciation.

Nevertheless, he said that the Mahama government should be commended for the accomplishments.

He highlighted the significance of the currency’s rebound, noting that the cedi is currently trading at GH¢10.29 to $1, compared to around GH¢17 to $1 just a few months ago, a development he described as “remarkable.”

“But be that as it may, the fact remains that the Ghana Cedi is approximately GH¢11 to $1 TODAY. It was approximately GH¢11 to $1 a few months ago,” he added.
