Northern senators demand modern weapons for military to fight terrorists after Benue attacks | TheCable

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, chairman of the forum, the senators condemned the recent attacks in Benue state, in which over 100 people were killed by suspected herdsmen.

The lawmakers commiserated with the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

“The NSF commends President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to the affected areas, demonstrating the government’s commitment to addressing security challenges,” the statement reads.

“We urge the federal government to follow up with concrete actions to ensure justice and prevent future occurrences.

“The NSF calls for increased funding for the military and other security agencies to acquire the necessary modern equipment needed to prosecute the war against terrorists and insurgents.

“Furthermore, inter-agency collaboration is crucial; we urge the government to facilitate regular dialogue and coordination among security agencies.

“The NSF remains committed to working with the government and stakeholders to address security challenges.”

The forum called on Nigerians to remain alert and report suspicious activities to the relevant authorities, saying national security is a shared responsibility.

On Tuesday, Yemi Adaramodu, spokesperson of the senate, said the red chamber was saddened by news of the of more than 100 people in Yelwata, Benue state.

Speaking during a media briefing on Tuesday in Abuja, Adaramodu said the senate was of condolence visits.

The lawmaker said the upper legislative chamber is devastated by the repeated loss of lives in parts of the country, especially Plateau, Benue, Borno, and Zamfara states.
