No salary for 5 years, Kerala teacher dies by suicide
A 29-year-old woman, who worked as a teacher at a lower primary school in Kodanchery, was found hanging in her house in Kattipara, Kozhikode, in the southern Indian state of Kerala, according to media reports.
Media reports identified the deceased as Aleena Benny, a teacher at a school in Kodanchery. Her father, Benny, alleged that she was distressed over not receiving her salary for five years at her previous job. Before joining the school in Kodanchery, she had worked at another lower primary school.
According to her father, the corporate manager at her previous school allegedly made Aleena sign an affidavit relinquishing her salary and benefits for the five years she worked there. Reports suggest that the salary she received was covered by contributions from other teachers.
Aleena's family claims they paid Rs 13 lakh (Rs1.3 Million) to the Thamarassery Diocese Corporate Management when she secured her teaching position. She initially joined the school on a leave vacancy, reportedly with assurances of a permanent position. However, when the teacher on leave returned, Aleena was transferred to another school in Kodanchery, 25 kilometers from her home.
Aleena had been commuting daily to her new workplace for the past year. On the day of the incident, her colleagues tried to contact her but received no response. Concerned, they informed her father, who later found her hanging in her room around 3 pm.
Reports suggest that Aleena endured severe stress due to alleged workplace exploitation, raising serious concerns about the circumstances surrounding her employment and transfer. Authorities are expected to investigate the matter further.
