Nintendo has not officially commented on the design changes for either Diddy Kong or Donkey Kong. However, it's widely speculated that these alterations are linked to the characters' appearance in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Princess Peach has also received a slight redesign to align with her big-screen version, as seen in the box art for Princess Peach: Showtime!

Donkey Kong is set to star in the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 title, Donkey Kong Bananza. While Diddy Kong's inclusion is unconfirmed, the presence of other Kong relatives, such as Cranky Kong, and the recent redesign of Diddy Kong suggest his possible involvement. Additionally, the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, potentially titled Super Mario World, is expected to feature more of Nintendo's apes, including the redesigned Donkey Kong and possibly Diddy Kong.
