Niger govt shuts IBB varsity over security breaches
The Niger State Government has ordered the immediate closure of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, following recent security breaches and the loss of lives within the university community.
The directive was announced in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, on behalf of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.
The university is to remain shut until further notice.
The statement said, “The decision was taken in response to recent security breaches and the unfortunate loss of lives within the university community. The safety and security of all citizens, including students, remain the top priority for the government.”
The state government expressed deep sorrow over the incidents and assured that steps are being taken to address the situation urgently.
It also urged members of the university community to remain calm, vigilant, and to cooperate with security authorities during the period of closure.
Reiterating the government’s resolve to restore order, the statement added: “Government is resolute in its commitment to upholding law and order, as well as protecting the lives and property of all residents in Niger State.”
Efforts are ongoing to investigate the security incidents and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
