Nifty Bank hits all-time high; buying in heavyweights spur momentum

As bullish sentiment dominated D-Street, Nifty Bank on the monthly expiry day today (June 26, 2025) marked its fresh all-time high of 57,076.95. Buying action in heavyweights, including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and AU Small Finance Bank spurred the momentum in the high-beta index.

At the time of writing this copy at around 12:15 pm, Nifty Bank after clinching its fresh record high traded with gains of 0.63 per cent at 56,980.65. Meanwhile, the headline Nifty50 index also traded firm - hovering around 25,400 levels, with gains of nearly 0.6 per cent.

On a year-to-date basis, the index outperforming the bluechip Nifty50 index has climbed 11.87 per cent, while Nifty50 during the same time is up nearly 7.5 per cent.

Of the 12 stocks constituting the index, six scrips traded with gains, while the remaining six traded with cuts. Axis Bank was the top gainer from the pack (up 1.35 per cent), followed by HDFC Bank (up 1.3 per cent). Meanwhile, ICICI Bank, AU Small Finance Bank, IndusInd Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank traded with mild gains of up to 0.8 per cent as at the last count.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday announced to carry out a  variable rate reverse repo (VRRR) auction, a measure using which the apex banker absorbs excess liquidity from the banking system.

In its release, the lender said it will conduct a 7-day VRRR worth Rs 1 lakh crore from 10-10.30 am on Friday, its first in seven months.

Reports suggest that the liquidity surplus averaged at Rs 2.76 lakh crore in June, while the system liquidity peaked to Rs 3.62 lakh crore as on June 13- its highest level in 3 years.

For improving the system liquidity, RBI pumped in Rs 9.5 lakh crore since January 2025.
