In an effort to strengthen its position as a top travel destination for Chinese visitors, New Zealand is overhauling its visa policies. These changes are set to make it easier, faster, and more cost-effective for Chinese travelers to visit, driving further growth in the country’s tourism sector and benefiting the national economy.

Starting in November, New Zealand will launch a trial program granting visa waiver status to Chinese passport holders traveling from Australia. To qualify, travelers must hold a valid Australian visa—whether visitor, work, student, or family—and will be allowed to stay in New Zealand for up to three months without applying for a visa. This trial, which will run for 12 months, is expected to streamline the entry process for Chinese tourists, offering a faster and more affordable way to travel across the Tasman Sea.

The introduction of this visa waiver trial complements New Zealand’s commitment to refining its immigration procedures. It is part of a broader initiative to make the country more accessible to international visitors, especially Chinese tourists, who are seen as a key market for New Zealand’s tourism industry. One of these changes is the creation of a dedicated contact center aimed specifically at Chinese ‘Approved Destination Status’ (ADS) travel agents. This new resource will provide guidance and assistance to agents, helping them offer a seamless experience for tourists looking to visit New Zealand.

To further support Chinese travelers, the Immigration New Zealand (INZ) website will be updated with Simplified Chinese content. This will make the site easier to navigate for Chinese applicants and help ensure they have all the information needed to complete their visa applications efficiently.

A significant step forward is the removal of the requirement for certified translations of documents for Visitor Visa applicants. Previously, Chinese travelers were required to have their documents translated and certified, which added both time and cost to the visa application process. With this new change, all applicants—regardless of nationality—will no longer need to have their documents certified. This reduction in bureaucracy will save time and eliminate unnecessary translation fees, further streamlining the process for those looking to visit New Zealand.

These updates are in line with New Zealand’s existing multiple-entry Visitor Visa, which allows Chinese travelers to visit the country multiple times over a five-year period. The quick processing times for visitor visas—averaging just five working days for Chinese applicants—are also a strong selling point for those considering travel to New Zealand. The new measures are designed to enhance these existing benefits and ensure that the country remains a competitive and attractive destination for Chinese tourists.

China represents one of New Zealand’s most significant tourism markets, with Chinese visitors contributing billions to the national economy. In the year ending March 2025, it is estimated that Chinese tourists will inject $1.24 billion into New Zealand’s economy. This substantial financial contribution underscores the importance of the Chinese market to New Zealand’s tourism sector, with benefits extending across many industries, from hospitality to retail and transportation.
